The Paradise Called Mykonos
Part of the
Cyclades Islands of Greece, Mykonos is renowned as a tourist destination. The
glamorous lifestyle, beautiful sights and fascinating history have made it one
of the most popular destinations in Greece. Many consider it to be the Greek version
of Saint-Tropez, with over 300 beaches and night parties.
History
Mykonos has a
long and interesting history as well. In ancient times, it was inhabited by Egyptians,
Cretans, Phoenicians and Ionians. It was also used as a supply island. Tourism
started dominating the economy of Mykonos after 1950. Mykonos is named after
the son of mythical king of Delos named Anius.
Weather
Mykonos has
abundant sunshine nearly all year round. Temperatures are around 20 degrees
Celsius in spring and autumn. In July and August, the temperature is around the
30 degree Celsius mark. Winters are fairly cold though. However, tourists flock
to Mykonos throughout the year.
Getting to Mykonos
Coming by
airplane is by far the most convenient way to reach Mykonos. There are regular
daily flights from Athens to Mykonos. You can also take the fast boat or
catamaran from Piraeus (Athens’ port) and reach Mykonos in about three hours.
Ferries from Piraeus take about six hours to reach Mykonos. You can rent a car
or motorcycle in Mykonos, which enable you to explore further off areas in the
island.
Sightseeing and Things to Do
You can start
sightseeing at Mykonos town, which is called Mykonos Chora by the locals. Its
narrow streets and white houses make it an interesting place to visit. The main
street is called Matoyanni, and is lined with bars, shops and cafes, which are
designed to suit all budgets.
You must also go
up to the Central Harbour of Chora, where lovely views of the sea are yours to
savour. The esplanande near the Harbour has wonderful restaurants and bars. The
Church of Paraportiani
is also close to the Harbour, and is located on the Western side. The Church is
actually a complex of five buildings. Southeast of the Mykonos Chora, are the
famous windmills, which are worth having a look at. At night, the Little Venice
area of Chora is full of activity and so is downtown Chora.
The beaches in Mykonos are long and sandy. At
the beach, you can rent equipment for sailing, surfing, windsurfing or jet
skiing.
For those who enjoy soaking in a bit of
culture, Mykonos Chora has two museums. The Mykonos Archaeological Museum
contains archaeological finds from selected areas of Greece. The Aegean
Maritime Museum is the second museum, located in the town centre. It contains artefacts
related to Mykonos’ maritime history.
Taking a day trip to Delos is a good idea if
you are staying a couple of days in Mykonos. Delos is famous for its ancient
Greek building ruins. It is also considered to be the birth place of Apollo and
Artemis, Greek mythological figures. A visit to the Delos Archaeological Museum
is also highly recommended.
All in all, Mykonos is a wonderful place for a
vacation. If you are visiting Greece, then make sure that Mykonos is part of
your itinerary too!
