Spruce Up Your Fitness Regime with Fun Activities

We all know that a regular dose of exercise is extremely important for us, in order to be healthy and fit. And, most of us have been to the gym at some or the other point. However, after a few days most of us also give it up on one fine day. In fact, sometimes you miss out on the whole routine because all you want to do is sit in front of the computer or watch television instead! This shows that it is nothing but boredom that has crept into your fitness regime. Nonetheless, instead of turning into a couch potato and making all sort of excuses, why don’t you try out something new…something that is fun and which leaves no scope for  boredom. If the whole gym and jogging routine is not your scene, fret not. Instead, why don't you spruce up your fitness regime with some fun activities instead!

Put on your dancing shoes and do the jiggy

Personally, I believe that nothing can be as invigorating as a good dance. Just think of it, is there any scope for boredom when you are jiving away to your favorite beats? Dancing is a real cool way to knock of some extra kilos from your body without even realizing that it is basically an exercise.

In fact have you ever thought of enrolling in dance classes? Well, not only do they make you more fit but also give you a scope to show of your dancing skills at the next big do that you are invited to. (Not to mention all the members of the opposite gender who will be going gaga over your moves). There are a lot of options to choose from when it comes to dancing, it could be salsa, line dancing, meringue, ball room dancing or jazz. Apart from helping you sport a new toned body; dance classes also build up a high level of confidence in your demeanor and add a spring to your walk. Not to mention, how young and lissome it will make you feel. You can also add more spice to your dance class by convincing your partner to join in.

Play up the music while you do the household chores everyday

We all know doing household chores is a subtle form of exercise. However, you can add more spunk, to the routine, by playing your favorite music. Not only will it help you sail through your  cleaning, sprucing, mending  routing but also the upbeat music will help you put in more energy to the work. This means you will be losing more calories.

Beautify your garden

Who doesn't like to appreciate flowers, especially when the weather is breezy and beautiful? Well, next time, don’t just stand there and simply gaze away to your heart’s content. Instead, bring out the spade and the trowel and get digging in your backyard or terrace or wherever you have a small patch of garden. Whether it is planting some new flowers and seedlings, trimming the hedges or just snipping a bit from here and there, they all count as healthy exercise especially when you take in the fresh air and enjoy the beautiful sunshine. Pssst…when the neighbors are not looking (actually who cares even if they), you could roll about on the grass, and do a little “skippity-hoppity” (Yes we are never too old for this…I repeat…let your inner child loose) or just jump and rollick. Exercise has never been this much fun.

Try out Pilate or yoga

Pilate and yoga are more fun than a regular mundane routine at the gym. You could either join such classes or assemble a bunch of friends together and get a trainer. This will also be a great way to bond with your friends. In fact, it’s a better idea to hang out with your friends on the pretext of Pilate or yoga (yup, just pretend it’s a pretext because this way you won’t feel monotony rise in your routine) than meeting them for lunch or over a crate of beer.

Hike, run or simply walk

Butterflies trailing alongside, the smell of sweet flowers and the feeling of exhilaration…yes you can enjoy such an experience everyday if you go hiking. You can always begin with trails that are easy, and then slowly build up your stamina so that you are geared for steeper and longer paths. In fact you can explore different routes after every week or so, this would also mean that you have less chances of getting bored. The fresh air will also make you feel more energetic. Hiking is always fun.

Run after your kids, siblings or for that matter your neighbors’ kids (as long as their mothers don’t give you a glaring look and as long as you don’t get so involved in it that you look like a psychotic loony) and chase them around in the park or yard. In fact, do you remember the joys of playing “come and catch me” during childhood? You could do the same now, so every evening collect your children (or your neighbors, i.e., as said earlier if their parents do not mind) and have a good dose of running around. Not only will stress and tension drain out of your body but you will also have an increased level of energy, not to mention the amount of exercise that you will get due to all the mindless running.

A nice stroll in the evening also contributes towards a healthier body. A walk, whether taken in the morning, evening or night, is a good way to work the limbs. You won’t even come to know that you are exercising, especially if you take along someone with you. See the minutes fly without even realizing it. In fact, before you know, you will probably have to be convinced to call it a day, because you might be so animatedly involved in the conversation that you may fail to notice its past dinner time!

If you are going solo for your walk or hike, then take along the iPod or the portable mp3 player/Walkman. Not only will the beats of the music add a spring to your step but you will be so engrossed that you won’t even come to know that its time to head back home. Music is a great rejuvenator and keeps you from feeling tired, and in this way you can complete your laps in peace.

Hit the pedal of the bicycle

Do you remember how much fun you had bicycling up and down the lane? Who says you can’t do it now! You can go for a spin every evening and plan out longer ones for the weekend and get your whole family to join in. Zooming on the bike is a great way to keep fit.

Dive into the pool.

When it comes to a combination of relaxation and exercise, nothing can beat swimming. What can be a better way to leave behind a hectic day than a plunge in the pool? It is one of the best forms of exercises and you can make it even more effective by doing some aquatic exercises while in the pool. It takes more effort to work your muscles under water, therefore any free style exercise you do will be more effective. You could also introduce games such as water volley ball etc in your daily swimming routine once in a while to make it more fun.

You can also do a mix and match of the activities mentioned above. One day you could hit the pool and the next day you can zoom around on your bike. So, now you have no more excuses when it comes to missing out on the exercise. What we must all remember is that sometimes spending hours at the gym is not the ultimate move when it comes to a healthier body. A healthy person is one who is mentally happy too; therefore your fitness routine should have a fun element so that you enjoy yourself and look forward to it, instead of shirking away. This will leave no scope for boredom and you will face a fitter you in the mirror!

Get Set…To Guard Your Family Against Stress.

Commuting two hours for work…reaching late….Boss gives hell for not meeting project deadlines… you drop coffee/ketchup on your white clothes…generally, a bad day at work…tremendous headache…you come home…your children are bickering amongst themselves…your spouse enters the scenario and throws in a complaint or two about you…you all end up having a yelling match! By the end of it all your headache has turned into a head splitting pain…you are tired, frustrated and drained out of any remaining energy that you still had…not to mention facing the boss again tomorrow…and it’s just Tuesday…no respite till the weekend from all this humdrum…all you want to do now is shut yourself away from everyone and everything…but you end up shouting at the others…and ultimately it all culminates in a fight…

Does any of this sound familiar? If yes, well, then welcome to the world of stress. Stress is not only in itself a huge problem, but at the same time it promotes anger, irritability, and tension to name a few. Stress could be created due to events that have taken place outside home and a family member furthers it by bringing it inside. It can also be created due to a built of pent up emotions such as frustrations, anxiety or mental tiredness that have no release outlet. Too many things on the mind or too much work can also contribute to it. As discussed above, in all probability you could be having a terrible time at work and you bring that frustration home in the form of stress. This in turn leads to events that create tension and stress in the house. Stress is usually accompanied with crankiness, discontentment, angry outbursts, fatigue, headaches and a host of other problems. As a result, a distance could start to form between husband and wife or parents and children or a distance that separates each family member from another. Though this sounds scary, it could be true. In the long run, such a situation can contribute to the family becoming dysfunctional. Therefore before you or any of the other members are anywhere near such a damaging situation, it is best to unite as a family and fight it off together, even if it happens to affect only one member. Read on to know how you can guard your family against stress.

A daily interactive session amongst the family members helps in reducing stress.

In today’s time of “hectic schedules”, often it has been noticed that a lot of families rush through the week at a fast pace with bare minimum interactions with each other, only to reconnect during the weekends. This is where most of us go wrong. Yes, weekends are the perfect time to put the worries behind and have a gala time, but research reports say that stress is encountered mostly in the weekdays. Therefore, it is not only the weekends when you should reconnect with your family. Inculcate the habit of setting aside a particular time in the day, when every member of the family is present. It could be during dinner time or around the television in the evening. You could also make time for a game of monopoly. Rituals such as these promote a sense of belonging and security. It creates a healthy atmosphere that helps us in handling stress better. This particular time can be used to talk about the day, discuss trivial matters and for lots of bantering and laughter. You must remember not to turn this daily family time into a “blame each other match”. This time should be used solely to relax the mind and drain the stress out and not yell, blame or shout at others just because they are unable to comprehend the reason behind your disturbed state of mind.

Do not isolate yourself when stressed out, talk it out with your family…better still forget about it by involving yourself in a pillow fight (yes you heard right!)

Continuing with the point discussed above, more often than not, people tend to isolate themselves to ease out stress. Agreed, that a long soak in the tub surrounded by scented candles and a chilled glass of wine or a session of kick boxing might help you feel good, however temporary solutions such as this do not really help in the long run. What is needed is a complete rejuvenation, and believe it or not though we completely ignore the fact, nothing can be as therapeutic as a long interactive session with your loved ones. Yes, instead of shutting yourself in a room you could have a healthy discussion with your partner or your children on just about anything. The stress buster here is sharing, when you share anything the problem becomes easier to solve. The same can be said of stress. Often, talking about a problem and discussing it with others helps to minimize it. If you talk about your day and all the things that made you feel awful, then you will be instantly letting go of your stress level bit by bit. Trust me, you’ll be feeling better in no time and stress will be long forgotten. After all how can you be stressed out when your wife is talking about her theatre workshop, your son is animatedly discussing his new guitar or your daughter is enticing you into a pillow fight! It is all about surrounding yourself with positive energy. In the same way, you could help in easing out your partner or children’s stress levels by devoting time to them. If your spouse or children seem withdrawn, then try to get them out of the shell by encouraging them to talk about the thing that might be bothering them.

Resilience and recreation, both are important for your children in order to stay free of stress.

It is important to encourage and promote resilience in the family, especially amongst your children. A lot of families ignore the fact that anyone can experience stress, even the children, and especially the teenagers. Homework pressure, the feeling of not being able to match up to their peers, the tension of not being good enough etc all lead to the development of stress. Do not ignore the problems of your children, even if they sound trivial. Help them to cope up with stress by teaching them to keep a positive outlook in difficult situations. They should be able to handle stress by a quick bounce back. See that they do not spend most of their time sitting all alone in a room. They should be encouraged to hang out with friends. Ensure that they have some sort of a recreation avenue. This goes for you and your partner too.

Incorporate healthy habits in your daily life.

Nutritious meal taken at correct time helps in help in warding off stress. This may sound like a very general advice but in fact when stressed out, people start to ignore meals. This in itself creates a host of other problems. Meal time should mean sitting down properly and devoting at least twenty minutes to the meal. This helps in calming the mind. During meal time concentrate on the food and banish all other thoughts. It is also imperative to take time out for a bit of exercise, even if it means jumping in the backyard! Exercise is one of the biggest stress busters. You should see that everyone in the family is getting adequate exercise every day. A good dose of exercise also means a good sleep in the night. If you are not getting adequate sleep in the night then it will invariably lead to add on stress the next day. So in order to start the next day on a fresh note, see that the sleep factor is not lacking. Ensure that there is a routine time when the lights are switched off, especially when it concerns the children. This will promote a sense of regularity. A sense of regularity helps in maintaining discipline. This in its own way does help in keeping out the stress.

Keep stress at bay by ensuring that everyone manages their time effectively.

Time management is an extremely important factor when it comes to managing stress. Often, we get stressed out when we have to run against time. “I am late for work”, “Why do I have to get stuck in traffic right now when I have a client meeting in five minutes”, “I have not finished my school project yet and I have to submit it tomorrow”, “The guests will be here in an hour and we still have not sorted out anything”, “I forgot to book the tickets”…factors and situations such as these all pile up to form a high level of stress. Often, small things are kept at the very back, but it is these small things that culminate together at the last moment to contribute to a hectic schedule. It has been seen that failure to keep up with this schedule can lead to stress. Therefore, it is imperative to inculcate the importance of time management in your family. Avoid the built up of panic by ensuring that all work is finished before its due time. Do not wait for the last moment to get started on some important thing. See that the rest of your family members too, don’t have a pile up of work whether it is preparing a client report or a school report.

Repeated criticisms of each other’s shortcomings aggravate stress.

It is important that you do not contribute to a family member’s stress level by criticism. He or she is your spouse or your child and you should be there to support them when they approach you with a problem. Instead of criticizing your son for not getting good grades, maybe you could sit and discuss the factors which are holding him back from attaining those. For all you know, he could be completely stressed out because he’s not doing well which in turn leads to a bad performance again. Minimize unnecessary criticism, what is needed here is support. Do you really want to get back home after a maddening day at work to be told, “Dinah, you are looking awful…you need a makeover and you need to lose weight!” or “Ed, I hope you didn’t forget to pick up the grocery because I am the one who does it all the time, while the only thing you do is come back home and read the newspaper”. Well, here you are completely stressed out and your appearance is the last thing on your mind, and these are the words that you get to hear (even if said in good regard)…do you think it will help in reducing the stress level? Or, here you are looking forward to a relaxing time ahead and you hear your wife complain when all you want is a cup of hot chocolate. She could have waited for at least some time without barging on you, couldn’t she? In all effect, you’ll probably push the panic button or retort sarcastically or start to have a shouting match out and out, which in this case is not the best of stress buster. Therefore, a session in criticizing is not a very good thing because it only promotes stress.

Always remember that each member of the family should be there to support the other emotionally and mentally and there should be a healthy interaction amongst all. You all need to devote time to each other in order to understand your own family better. A family that has a nice camaraderie is able to fight off and guard against stress effectively. Stress should remain outside the boundaries of your home.

Make Joint Strengthening Exercises A Part Of Your Schedule To Fight Arthritis.

It is quite essential to incorporate joint strengthening exercises into our daily fitness routine. This is a necessity as they help in keeping health hazards such as arthritis at bay. This condition affects a large number of people every year and results in pain in the joints of the body. As a result the affected people are not able to move their limbs freely and this aggravates the process of aging. Arthritis often gives way to osteoarthritis in older adults. This develops over a period of time due to the wear and tear that the joints undergo. Injury, poor posture and obesity may hasten its development.

People suffering from arthritis should not keep away from exercises. In fact it is more of a necessity for them because exercise, especially joint strengthening ones prove to be a two way street. Not only do they help in relieving a person from joint pains but at the same time minimize the chances of future occurrences of serious pain. At the same time, people who have not been affected by arthritis can keep this condition at an arm’s length by doing joint strengthening exercises.

Let us take a look certain exercises that help in strengthening the joints and in this way prevent conditions such as arthritis from occurring in the first place. .

Start riding a bicycle

Unlike a lot of exercises such as dancing, aerobics, running or walking (however stroll walking or doing a light aerobics is also good and easy on the joints), bicycling is a lot gentler on the joints. It can also be done by people of all age groups. There is also a lower chance of spraining or hurting yourself. If you are not too comfortable with cycling on the track or around your neighbourhood, then you can always invest in a stationary exercise bicycle. In fact, you can make it less of monotony to bicycle in the house by stationing yourself in front of the television. This way you will be occupied and won’t notice the minutes fly by. Alternatively, you could also read a book, magazine or newspaper or simply listen to some nice music when you are pedalling away.

Stretch as much as you can

More often than not, people tend to neglect exercises that involve stretching. However, though they might not really help in losing weight (exercise is not meant only for losing weight or toning up but to keep the body young, fit and healthy) they are quite important because they help in strengthening the joints. Therefore, you must incorporate at least thirty minutes of stretching twice or thrice a week. It will even be more helpful if you could do it for a shorter span of about fifteen minutes every day.

Climbing stairs can be quite beneficial

This exercise is one of the most effective ways of strengthening the joints, muscles and bones of the lower body. The best part about this exercise is that you do not have to get membership in a gym in order to avail stairs. They are available everywhere, in the office, your house and the mall. So each day see that you do your share of stair climbing. And avoid using the elevator or the escalator if you have to go only one floor up. In fact you can use the elevator to get up five floors and then take the flight of stairs in order to reach your destination on the sixth floor.

Go for a swim

Swimming is an excellent exercise for the joints. The free flow of your limbs means that you won’t shock or hurt them unnecessarily. In fact even if you do not want to swim, you can always sit in the water and do some free style exercises such as a cycling motion, leg and arm flap under water. Water usually puts more pressure on your body as a result even the easiest exercise needs a bit of effort. This ensures that you having a good workout. At the same time the cool water lapping against you makes you feel totally relaxed.

Ask your trainer at the gym to help you with advanced levels of joint strengthening exercises

A moderate level of weight training is a good way to strengthen the joints. Some of these would include seated chest presses, leg curls and leg presses among others. Ensure that a trainer is always around to point out any mistakes that you might be making (it is best not to take chances especially if your joints are already weak.

If you are suffering from arthritis prior to starting the above mentioned exercises, then you need to be careful about certain things. To begin with consult your doctor before you start on any new fitness regime. Notify him immediately if you notice pain that continues over a period of time, any swelling in the joints, if you experience an increase in your level of weakness or if you feel fatigued all the time.

In case you think that some of these exercises are just too difficult for you to start with, then you need to gear up your body first by starting with simpler exercises such as stretching to strengthen the joints. And gradually you should introduce higher levels of exercises based on the endurance level of your body. Give your body some time to adjust to the new program and never overdo anything even if it seems easy and light on the body. Strenuous exercise does not necessarily translate into more effective exercise.

Always remember that inactivity is the worst enemy of a healthy body, therefore you should always engage yourself in some or the other activity. And while you are at it, do not forget to pay attention to exercises that strengthen your joints because this will help you to keep aging at bay and win over conditions such as arthritis. It is never too late to start exercising. What we must not forget is that exercise is a preventive measure, and prevention is always better than cure.

Quick beauty fixers…a few minutes are all it will take

Between work, gym, finishing the household chores, catching up with friends or running after the children how many of us actually have the time to devote to a stretched out beauty routine? In fact whether it’s a party, an important meeting at the office or a night out in town, we usually do not have more than fifteen minutes to spare to get dressed. Well, there is no need to worry because fifteen minutes will sound like a lot of time once you incorporate in your routine, the beauty shortcuts that we have got for you.

Make your skin glow with health…who says you need to hit the spa all the time

A radiant face that emanates a rosy glow does not mean that you have to spend hours going through a facial therapy. However, you can trick others into believing that you are a high maintenance spa diva because of the gleam on your face. All you have to do is exfoliate your face with a face scrub that is ultra soft and contains beads (these act as buffers). This will help in removing the dead skin cells from your face. After this, slather on some hydrating mask on your face in a thick layer. After five minutes rinse off the mask with water and follow it up by applying your moisturizer, “hi, beautiful!”

While in the shower, rub on body oil or some heavy body lotion just before you apply the bath gel. Not only will your skin feel smoother in minutes but you won’t have to apply body lotion post shower. Also, the cream will be absorbed better in your skin due to the warm atmosphere of the bath.

Glamorous hair does not mean that you have to spend hours in the salon

Your friends call you up to tell that they are hitting the club in twenty minutes and here you are with limp hair falling flat on your head, and there’s no time for a quick shampoo, don’t hit the panic button. All you have to do is take a tiny amount of any sculpting wax that is light and rub it between your palms. When it is reduced to just a sheen, apply it on the hair roots in scrunching motions. This will add oomph to your hair in minutes, and you will still have a lot of time to apply your make up and choose your clothes.

You can also jazz up hair, by slipping on a headband that is shiny, metallic or flashy. Not only are these the in thing right now, but they also give you a dressy look without any hassles whatsoever.

Always remember that creams and pomades take a longer time to dry than mousses, gels and hair sprays. So if you are in hurry and relying solely on air drying, you know now what to slather on your hair.

If you are a late riser, you can always go in for the bed head hair. However, ensure it does not look outright crazy by applying light serum on problem areas such as flyaways or creases. Complete the look with a fast blow dry to get the tousled effect. No one at work is going to know that you slept late.

We usually correlate a blow dry with eternity in terms of time, but if you use a brush that is extra wide and round then it will take less time to cover more hair. Also, the barrel like brush will give a smoother finish. So next times don’t cringe when you want diva hair in five minutes because you know the secret.

Apply and dry your nail polish in a few minutes

All ready for your important meeting, when you notice chipped nails…no you do not have to shriek, we have a fixer for that too. Most often, we tend to put a thick coat of nail polish to get it done with quickly. But this is where we go wrong because all we get is lumpy bubble formations on the paint that takes forever to dry. Instead, apply two thin coats of polish because this dries up very quickly.

Banish the awful zit at the very speed that it took to pop up!

A last minute zit is never good news. However, instead of calling your friends and raving and ranting, what you can do is dab some toner on the zit. This will help in drying up excess oil. Follow this up by rubbing tissue wrapped ice cube on the zit, this will flatten and cool the bump. However, you should take care not to rub on the ice cube for too long because this will make the area redder. Once you are through with the ice cube application, put some concealer on the zit, and let’s see who can guess that you have a zit!

Quick make up tricks that will give competition to your stylist at the beauty salon

If you have, but a few minutes to rush through makeup, go for a red lipstick. The colour itself will open up your face and you won’t have to apply anything else to give it a spark. Pick up a warm brownish red for a more glamorous appeal. Add just a dash of lip gloss on top to complete the glam doll effect.

For a nice pout mix some salt and olive oil in your lip balm. Sodium has the ability to bloat up the skin and the oil gives it a super moisturizing effect. Who needs botox to get pouty lips!

Add a deep pink or peachy cream blush on your cheeks and eyelids and two coats of mascara on your eyelashes to instantly perk up a sleepy face. So there is no need to wait for an hour or two to get rid of the tell tale face that says “I was sleeping”.

To have outrageously gorgeous eyes in a minute, just rim your upper and lower lash lines with kohl. Use a cotton swab to blend it to give the word seductive a new meaning.

So next time someone notifies you of an event at the last minute, put on some good music while you sail through your “quick” beauty regime.
